Project 7 Prework

The Surrealism Movement was an artistic movement starting in the 1920's. It sought to merge the differences between dreams and reality, and often created strange scenarios and creatures using everyday objects and fantastical paintings. Many surrealistic artists regard their work as not just and artistic movement but an "expression of the philosophical movement" as well.

The Hallucinogenic Toreador- Salvador Dali (1970)
Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was perhaps one of the most famous surrealistic artists of the movement. He was best known for his bizarre and intriguing paintings incorporating many different elements into one. One of his best known paintings is The Persistence of Memory (1931), featuring melting clocks in a vast, desolate background.

The Pilgrim- Rene Magritte (1966)
Rene Magritte was also an extremely famous surrealistic artist. His work is known for challenging the viewers' view of reality, which later influenced the work of minimalist, pop, and conceptual art movements.

Ubu Imperator- Max Ernst (1923)
Max Ernst was a German artist known for pioneering the Dada movement and contributing to Surrealism.
